Menubar Icon + Update Window Won't Appear

I am running Sophos Free on Mac Tiger 10.4.11. I had to uninstall/reinstall Sophos because I was making changes to my system, which is functioning properly. I got a notice at the completion of the install that there were errors, try re-installing again. After a couple of attempts with the same error appearing, I ran the program, in fact, running the system scan as I am writing this. When I check the log, all appears to be working well (even in Preferences, all access scanning is working), even the update to the Jan3/2011 version of Sophos. The problem is that the icon will not appear in the menubar or if i initiate a manual update, the window will not appear so Sophos is working but I cannot visually follow it. How can I fix this? If I can't but Sophos seems to be working can I just let it function in the BG, occasionally checking the log to be certain of updates? In case of Malware, with this problem, will Sophos be able to notify me? I am not a techie, not of the computer generation, a fairly new Mac user, so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

  • Hi pixturesk,

Please check the folder Sophos Anti-Virus in the Library folder.  Is there a file named SophosUIServer in there?

1)If there is then launch Sophos Anti-VIrus from the Applications folder.

In the "Sophos Ant-Virus" menu the 2nd item should be "Show Status in Menu Bar".

Choose this and the Sophos icon should now appear in the menubar.

2)If the file is missing, try uninstalling and reinstalling Sophos

To uninstall launch "Sophos Remove" from the Applications folder and follow the instructions.

Reboot the Mac and run the installer again.

    I hope this helps.

  • The icon won't appear because of the Activity Monitor in Mac Tiger, However, your suggestion about the SophosUIServer works perfectly. I copied that icon to my desktop, will run my updates from there. When I click on the icon, the Black icon appears in the menubar, stays there until I shot off my computer. Then I just have to click on the desktop icon again when I bootup the computer. With the "on access" scanner running in the BG, this works great. Thanks, Ken.

  • I went one step further. I went to System Preferences, then Accounts, then LogIn items, made the SophosUIServer a login item so the black icon (although with an "X" through it) now appears whenever I bootup the computer, I can run Sophos from there.
