Cannot Install Software

When trying to install the software I get a message saying that it is unable to install because "another version Sophos anti-virus software, which is not compatible with this version, is already installed". It tells me I must remove it before I can continue. I did have a Sophos program on my computer years ago provided to me by my post-secondary institution but I thought I had removed completely. I cannot find any files or uninstaller from the old program on my computer.

Does anyone have any idea on how I can continue installing the new software?

Thanks!

rodeidem, please make sure you have run the uninstaller Sophos Endpoint Security and Control: how to remove from Windows and Mac OS X , you may want to restart your system after, though this is not normally required.  Please check the following link for files that may be left behind Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X: uninstaller does not remove all files.

Once that process is complete, please try running the installer again."

Hi.  Is there anything more we can do if we've done both of these things?

Disclaimer: I'm not a support person, but this is what I'd do:  try re-installing the commercial version (download a trial version if you don't have access to the original installer) and then use the uninstaller it installs to completely uninstall the product.  You might also want to check the system log in your Console app to see what files the installer and uninstaller modify; this should point you to any lingering bits the new installer might be having problems with.

I would guess that the new installer is finding some key file or process that it needs to overwrite already on your system.

One far-fetched but pertinent question: if you create a new user and try installing via that account, will this let you install the product? (this will isolate whether the problem is in userland or in the files installed under root).
