The latest posts on this subject are dated 2011. It's now 2013. My scan has frozen at about 20% of my files and folders. I have a Mac and am running OX s 10.8.4. Any advice on how to advance it?

Reading other posts everyone seems to use different words to describe similar problems: "hang", "crash", "freeze" - they may all be related. Does it completely freeze or is it just taking a really long time at a certain point in the scan? How long did the scan run for before the freeze? And then how long did you leave the scan to let it work through the freeze before you quit it?
Create a custom scan of the whole drive and uncheck the 'Scan archives and compressed files' option on the options tab and then run it (see this post). Does that scan 'freeze'?
If it doesn't then it a compressed file causing the problem. Even if it's not you should run the command below and see if you can spot where the scan hangs and then check the log (that's being written to on you Desktop) and see if you can identify the file.
sudo sweep / -dn 2> ~/Desktop/manualscan.txt
