Confused about Virus Removal Tool

Hi everyone, this may just be a newbie-type question, but.....

What is the latest version of the Free Virus Removal Tool and where do I get it from?

The Free Tools Get Started box says version 6.2 but version downloaded claims to be version 2.4 when I start to instal it.

Also, there are no Digital Signatures in this version when compared to the previous one I had (2.3 signed 13/02/2013) and the Details tab shows File version as 2.3.0.0 (same the 2.3 one), but Product version as 2.4.

So, as you can see, something is wrong or is it just me getting the update from the wrong place.

Cheers,

  • Looks like the version of '6.2' is a typo and should be '2.4' - I'll ask for that to be corrected, thanks.

Not sure where you are looking, but if I right-click a binary file (e.g., .dll, .exe) in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Virus Removal Tool\ folder, select 'Properties' and then select the 'Digitial Signatures' tab I see one.

  • Hello ruckus,

    if I right-click a binary file

it's the download itself (Sophos Virus Removal Tool.exe) which now (I've just checked) doesn't have a signature - it had one in mid-July.

  • Spot on QC, thank you for clarifying my point, and also proving it wasn't just me, Phew.

Look forward to using the tool now.

  • Thanks ruckus for getting the Get Started version corrected.

However, I have just re-downloaded the tool and the downloaded tool has grown from 71.0Mb to 72.3Mb but there is still no Digital Signature and the Details Tab still shows the mismatch between File Version and Product Version as I originally described.

So, if the tool has been rebuilt, why have these oversights not been addressed, particularly the Digital Signature ommission which for a Security Company seems a bit strange?

Also, if the tool has been rebuilt why is the version still 2.4, surely it should be now 2.5 or something higher?

    Cheers,

  • Hi,

We rebuild the tool whenever we publish new identities, to reduce the amount of updating you need to do when you run it the first time. The version only gets updated when we actually add new capabilities.

I wanted to thank you for highlighting the issue with the digital signature, this is due to a break in one of our internal system and is being worked on as we speak.

Again thanks for the feedback it helps me and the team a lot so keep it up,
