Access to chatrooms blocked by Sophos when using Google Chrome browser…!

Hi:

I am runnng Mac OS X 10.8x (Mountain Lion) on a Mac Mini. I usually use Safai as my browser, but am investigating Google Chrome...

I have come across a problem...

If I have Sophos running (I have the home-use version) and try to go into "any" chatroom I cannot get there via Chrome; but I can via Safari.

I have pepper flash installed (shows up in Chrome plugins and apparently is part of Chrome). If Sophos is not running (actually I removed it make the tests) then Chrome will access the chatrooms OK.

However re-enable/re-install Sophos and chatroom access isn't there (via Chrome), but it is still there via Safari.

Also when Sophos is "active" (installed etc.) I note that Safari appears to be a little slower (dare I say "noticeably slower") than without Sophos...?

Sophos seems to be nice little package; does what it says on the tin...

However with the Chrome/pepper-flash/chatroom access problems - I find it less satisfactory overall...

AmI missing something there re' Sophos and its settings? Is there an section where I can "tell" Sophos to let chatroom access via Chrome proceed as it were?

It (Sophos) seems to be OK with Safari with regard to chatrooms - but what's happening with Chrome and Sophos?

Also I am wondering about the apparent ("negative") effects on the performance of Safari too...; as I say above Sophos plus Safari seems to make Safari a little slower?

How do resolve the prpblesm with Chrome and chatrooms; and also is there anything that can be done to reduce/remove  the negative effects on the performance of Safari?

Thank you for any help (hopefully a resolution) offered...

  • OK two problems then:

    1. Can't access some chatrooms
    2. Web protection slows down surfing in Safari only.

    Thoughts/questions:

    For point 1:

    a. SAV 9.0.6 right?
    b. Easiest thing to do is to test this and see if I can recreate it. Can you give me some links to some of the chatrooms to test? Find some links that reliably show the problem and post back.
    c. You mention 'pepper flash' being installed. Is this significant?

    For point 2:

Browsing can be just a tiny bit slower - SAV has to intercept the page request from the browser, check it, and block/allow only once it's heard back from our lookup service. Therefore it's going to be slower - you can't do all that without a bit of delay.

That said it shouldn't be a big delay. Most users won't notice a delay. The post below shows a problem where the speed went down to dial-up days and obviously that isn't how it's mention to work. Have a read of that and the post linked to from that. DNS and Safari's prefetch could be the problem. Generally it's not SAV/Sophos unless loads of users raise the problem and we know a server has thrown a wobbly.
