Troj/Agent-AEBE virus

I received a notice of this virus on my Mac. But it looks like it's a Windows virus. So why did I receive the notice and do I need to clean it up?

Thanks!

  • Sophos antivirus for Mac detects both Windows and Mac (heck Linux and UNIX and OpenVMS and, and) viruses.  Hence if the file is malicious to any system Sophos will alert you to it.  It's good if you're swapping files with friends or colleagues who use Windows - you won't infect them.

Yes, you should cleanup the file.  Just depends where it is.  Open the quarantine manager up and see where it has been detected.  If it's just a file your Downloads folder etc. it's simple to clean up.  If the file is in Time Machine there are decisions to make.  If it's an attachment to an email message it's trickier.

  • It appears to be in the email. I chose to clean it up but it was spinning for so long that I figured it wasn't really working. Should it take hours to clean up?

  • Cleanup should only take a minute.  It's probably because it's attached to an email.

Best to open up your mail app, locate the message and delete from inside the mail program.  When it has gone you can clear the item from the quarantine manager.  FYI:  If the message is on the mail server it could get downloaded again so you could login to you webmail (if it is webmail) and delete the message from the server to prevent that from happening.

  • I deleted some junk email from the date indicated and it seems that I got the right one because the QM message is gone. Had a difficult time finding the file itself--just learned about Invisible Files (the Library folder with the Mail folder).  :-)

    Am doing a new scan.

    Thanks for your  help.
