Sophos for Mac md5 checksums missing from Sophos website!

The FAQ page for Sophos for Mac ( http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition/faqs.aspx ) has a link for the md5 checksum for the OS X 10.4 - 10.7 version, here:

http://downloads.sophos.com/home-edition/savosx_he.md5

There also used to be a checksum available for the OS X 10.8 version, by changing the name at the end of the URL to match the name of the OS X 10.8 version of the installer image.

Neither of these pages seem to exist anymore, though.

All you get now is "File not found."

Why have the checksums been removed?

Also, why is there no direct link for the OS X 10.8 checksum anyway?

  • Hello,

the file is still not available. Nobody aktually can check the file integrity.

    Please post the md5sum online.

  • Thanks :)

Could you please also provide a checksum for the 10.8 Mountain Lion version? (the file itself is here: http://downloads.sophos.com/home-edition/savosx_80_he.10.8+.dmg ). Changing the URL name manually does not work like it used to.

I use Mountain Lion, as do many others, and the number of ML users will only increase as time goes on... A checksum should really be provided for that version too, preferably with a proper link unlike before.

  • Any further update on this?

There is still no checksum for the Mountain Lion version. There *used* to be one, but it had no link and only worked by manually changing the URL of the normal checksum.

Will you provide a proper linked checksum for the Mountain Lion version?

Also, why did the original link break in the first place?

  • I contacted customer care in August about the checksums being incorrect, but as mentioned in this thread you could still get the correct one by changing the url for the md5 file but that's no longer the case.

I've sent another email and won't be reinstalling sophos until I can verify the file.

  • Thanks. That doesn't solve the issue, though.

As I mentioned in my original post, and as matsu mentioned today, you did actually used to be able to view the MD5 checksum for the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion version of Sophos by manually changing the URL for the <10.8 version's MD5 checksum... yet this broke when the linked checksum for <10.8 was removed, and hasn't been put back.

I understand that work is underway on the website, but it doesn't take very long to simply upload a page with the 10.8+ checksum on it and then edit the other page to add a link.

Why not add it now, instead of making people wait however long the website's overhaul is going to take?

Mountain Lion's share is growing and growing (e.g. http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/01/04/os-x-108-mountain-lion-overtakes-107-lion-internet-share-for-first-time ), so why not provide Mountain Lion users with the ability to double-check the intergrity of the Mountain Lion download of Sophos?

Also, do you know why the <10.8 MD5 checksum vanished originally? Why did the link break?

  • This is a bit odd, and makes me a bit concerned about installing to be honest.  Heck, couldn't someone just put the MD5 on this thread?

  • Unfortunately, this is still not available for 10.8.  I realize that this is probably not the top of the priority list, but for those of us who are security-minded, having a missing checksum file could indicate that the file is indeed compromised. I don't believe that to be the case, but it doesn't give the impression that Sophos is on the ball.

Personally, I've switched until I can verify the file.
