Mac Anti-Virus Effectiveness

We are running the free version of Sophos Anti-Virus on two late model Mac computers.  We are struggling with identity theft.  The virus scans are coming out clean.  Does anyone know how complete/accurate the scans are, and are there any resources to further check if the computers are compromised?

    What are the symptoms? ID thief can be due to a number of things.

    Do you shred mail (snail mail) before throwing it away? Answered any questionnaires lately? May not be that the computer is infected - it could be how it's being used (too much form filling and information sharing).
