Sophos lags in mid-scan

Just ran a full scan. Sophos made it about 1/3  of the way through before getting stuck on one particular file (I guess). The tray icon said it was still scanning, but it was stuck with a specific number of files left. I let it stay there for about 10 minutes before closing it and restarting the scan. It worked fine after that. It's got hung up before on individual files, but never for that long. Any idea what might be going on?

  • Yes; you likely have archive scanning turned on, and have hit a large archive (which needs to be decompressed and all its contents scanned).  You should have a file name listed under the scan bar; that file name will probably be an archive of some sort.

You can also have issues if you're scanning removable drives that are being (dis)connected during a scan.

  • Thanks Andrew. I sometimes see the files listed, but there wasn't anything on this particular occasion. I'll keep a look out if it happens again.

Also, did Sophos put out a large new update? When I did it today it was a large file.

    Thanks

    Neil

  • Sophos puts out monthly IDE rollups; you should now have threat data version 4.80 and engine version 3.34.  The product version is still being held at 8.0.6 until 8.0.7 has finished testing.

The IDE updates incorporate all the detection updates from the past month in an optimized package, improving performance and unifying the scanning logic.

  • Interesting. I noticed the scan is now much quicker.
