I assume you have both a Mac and a (Windows) PC (if not, I've misunderstood your question). BTW - it is strongly recommended that you run an AV on Windows, so I'm not sure what kind of scenario you have in mind.
Short answer is: yes
Long answer: Sophos will detect "cross-platform" threats but it can of course do so only if it has a chance to scan it. With the recommended settings the file will not be scanned if it is part of an archive, some other container or embedded in multiple layers of email forwards. It can't be scanned if it is encrypted or packed with a password. In other words - if you attempt to send it over in the original format it is subject to scanning (provided that on-access scanning is on and the file/path is not otherwise excluded from scanning).
