Virus Removal Tool Issues?

Hello all,

I recently installed the "Virus Removal Tool" after a bit of a scare about RootKits and had no issues, it ran, found and flagged a couple of files it didn't like and all was 'good'.

I had a 'funny' issue the last time I ran the previous version (2.4) - my User Profile' could not be found when logging on again to the PC, I hard rebooted the machine and logged on without any more problems and forgot the issue!

On Monday of this week I started the tool and it reported an update (version 2.5) needed to be installed - which I did - then started a scan. I cancelled the scan after a few minutes to Update a graphics driver, after this ended I logged off the PC and logged on again - only to find that my profile was gone again. In fact my whole User ('David') folder was missing entirely!

I did a recovery to a previous check point and was able to log in again.

YESTERDAY however, I decided to do a complete scan (since I broke the last one off) and now ALL Users - including 'David' and 'Administrator' are completely missing!

Feeling completely 'shafted' I am now wondering

A) what caused/causes this???

B) how the hell can I recover this quickly? (I DO have backups, but the Acronis Software will now not start and my backups are on a NAS Server)

and last but NOT least

C) how the hell can I stop this happening again? - I am sure that Sophos' tool is only indirectly responsible, maybe my handling is faulty.

If you have had the patience to read thus far and have any infos / answers for me please DO respond - thanks muchly.

brgds,

David D.

  • Hello David,

guess you can't "mishandle" the SVRT, furthermore I can't imagine why it should zilch the User folders - are these on the data disks? As a first step please check the tool's log (C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Sophos Virus Removal Tool\Logs\SophosVirusRemovalTool.log) for detections and actions or possible errors.
