New Mac user needs help

I am new to Sophos in addition to being an old coot that knows very little about computers. I downloaded, installed and started running a scan. It has been close to a week and I still have almost no progress, still shows 3,460,161 still to scan. I must be doing something wrong, can someone help. Thanks in advance.

    Likely it is working on a large archive (contents of archives get scanned but do not count towards the file count).

    However, SAV has three parts to it: the On Demand scans like you're doing, that look at your entire computer, On Access scans that happen in the background whenever anything on your computer is accessed for use, and finder-based single file scans.

    There are ways of discovering which archive you are currently scanning, but you could also just cancel the scan, disable archive scanning temporarily, and re-scan your computer.  It won't find anything in archives (including executable Java archives), but it will scan everything else, and be done much faster.

    You may then want to re-enable archive scanning and run a new scan, excluding a few archives that you aren't interested in.
