sophos is not spotting any problems

Last night my hotmail account was hacked and a false message sent out to all my contacts. I have run sophos and it says there are no problems on my computer, but there obviously is!!

Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try?

Secondly will sophos conflict with AVG linkscanner?

  • If your Hotmail account was hacked, that's a problem with your Hotmail account, hosted on Microsoft servers -- it has nothing to do with your personal computer.

The first thing to do is log in to your hotmail account and change your password.  Make sure the password you use is hard to guess... a phrase (at least 15 characters) with at least one punctuation mark in it should do the trick.  Next, review all the settings on your Hotmail account to ensure the attacker didn't reconfigure your account to give them a back door into the account (adding another authorized user, etc.).

Next, ensure that you aren't using either the old nor the new password on any other account, or you could find your Facebook/PayPal/Apple account etc. is the next to be compromised.

Of course, are you sure your account was hacked?  It could be someone who has you in their address book who was hacked, and your address was used by a spammer as the fake "From" after being pulled from *their* address book.  A quick look at the message headers should verify whether the mail actually came from your account.

Sophos shouldn't conflict with LinkScanner, as they are examining different material -- Sophos scans data on disk, and LinkScanner scans data in memory.
