Hello,
Consider having several hundred MB of mail on a server in an IMAP mailbox. Unfortunately, the server doesn't do a good job detecting or mitigating viruses and malware contained in messages on the server. So, one relies on anti-virus on the desktop.
When running Sophos Anti-Virus for a Mac, it detects the message attachments once they are downloaded. However, since its a IMAP mailbox, the mail client may download the attachment again at a later date. One way to mitigate the risks is to integrate the OS X Mail, or provide a generic means to connect to the IMAP server (OS X Server etc) and scan it for risks.
I also noticed that while the attachments with viruses and malware are detected, it doesn't detect or flag the actual message (aka EML) that contained the attachments.
In the end, the poor support for email makes the free version of Sophos less relevant, and creates a false sense of security. I say this because malware is often distributed via email, even if its just an innocent image loaded from a malicious site in order to reset your router password.
Sincerely,
Werner
BTW the spell check on the website doesn't know how to spell malware or Sophos. :)
