Anti-Virus for Mac makes computer hang and run very slowly

Am running Snow Leopard on an old iMac.  Since installation of AntiVirus there have been numous periods where my Mac has run very, very slowly or hung.  Checking the Activity Monitor showed Sophos absorbing most of the cycles, and when Sophos was disabled things speeded back up to normal.  How to deal with this?

  • What else was happening during those periods?  Were there backups running, torrents torrenting, large Java-based apps running?

Slowdown is usually associated with a large number of files being opened for access at the same time.

Does disabling archive scanning for on-access scans speed things up for you?

  • I am havin a similar problem. I moved 'Sophos Anti-virus Home Edition' from Applications to the trash (no un-install, irrespective of what I've seen on Sophos website) and it is still on my computer.

I would like you to tell me how to remove this software from my machine.

  • Addendum: The version of Sophos I installed had no 'Sophos Remove' not Sophos uninstall. Please assist.

  • Immediately underneath Sophos Anti-Viruss in your /Applications folder, you should have had Sophos Remove.  If you didn't, re-run the installer, and the app will be created.

If you actually had the enterprise version installed and not the home edition, the uninstaller will be in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/.

However, to stop your computer from running slowly, all you likely needed to do was disable archive scanning in the on-access component.  Barring that, you could disable on-access altogether, and only use scheduled scans or folder actions to trigger scans.

  • OK, Thank you for the help.

I re-installed and used the un-install. My computer still shows a file 'savosx_80_he.dmg' on it. How do I remove it, if I 'eject it' (only option) it shows as still there...

  • Having all the same problems that started with the update 8.0.5. Uninstalled Sophos and everything back to normal.

  • You can click the eject button next to the disk name, or press command-e when you have the disk or its main window highlighted.  Then you can throw the .dmg file (a virtual disk image file) in the trash and empty the trash.  This only removes the installer, not the installed software (assuming you've successfully run the installer on the disk image first).
