Can't update, won't uninstall.

Although I appreciate a free AV Sophos for Mac has been a fairly bad time for me since it started out by crashing my Macbook Pro (and still does, I tried the latest version) but now the iMac where it was working is giving up.

The shield in the Menu bar is simply back with an X in it.  Attempts to update are met with "Checking primary server" then "Could not update Sophos Anti-Virus" which would be fine except any attempt to remove it nets me "The uninstallation process failed with exit code 1"

Macpaw CleanMyMac makes some attempts to remove it when I ask it to, requesting admin to kill stray tasks but still fails.  I now know why as even using sudo kill -9 on the Sophos PID's simply has them restart immediately.

I would like to get it working again sure, but the other option is to get it off my computer so it is not wasting memory doing nothing.  Any advice please?

  • There is another extensive thread that details how to uninstall using SAV 4 Enterprise, SAV 7 Enterprise, and SAV 7 Home.  SAV 7 comes with an uninstaller.

As stated in the other threads, the easiest way to uninstall SAV 4 is to install the SAV 7 Enterprise trial version, which comes with an uninstaller.  Then run the uninstaller.  After that, you can install the Home version, which also comes with an uninstaller, as the previous poster noted.
