Sophos Antivirus for Mac - Not ready for primetime - UNINSTALLED

To the folks at Sophos, thanks for the attempt, but your product lasted less than a day on my 2.5 Ghz /  4Gb RAM / 250Gb HD Macbook Pro.

Here're my impressions, and why it was nuked after 16 hours:

The good:

  • Price is right for home users, who are most at risk of infection
  • Install is fairly good, straightforward.
  • Interface is pretty good, very Mac-like compared to some
  • Update was fast and painless

The So-So:

  • Install would not allow me to specify a new folder (I like to compartmentalize programs with more than one component into sub-folders in Applications, it's a personal preference)
  • Scan speed was moderately slow.  I tried it on a folder with 987Mb of files first.  Took over 10 minutes, hanging at one point for five minutes or more.
  • False positive. SL.EXE was identified as a Trojan, when in actuality it is a command-line scanner from Foundstone that I've been using on the Windows side of my job for eight years.  I store a copy of my USB drive on my Mac for EZ access and recovery when a 'doze AV overzealously nukes something (VNC being a favorite target nowadays)
  • System responsiveness became a little less snappy, but overall wasn't something I couldn't have lived with

The BAD:

  • This morning, using Firefox, I attempted to download a PDF from a vendor concerning an order I placed yesterday, using my ISPs webmail.  Firefox locked up on the Save dialog.  The Beachball of Spinning DOOM began to twirl, while the shield icon pulsed in the menu.  I waited...and waited...and...oh screw this...Force Quit.  Uh...nope.  Now Finder hung.  The Beachball of Spinning DOOM spun...and spun...and... WAIT!  Shutdown!  Punch the power button!  YES!  Choose Restart.  Wait...wait...wait...Firefox cancelled logout because...  >.<

In the end, I had to do a hard reset by standing on the power button.

This system has been rock solid for almost two years, with nary an issue, and the only change was your product being installed yesterday afternoon.

After uninstalling I went to my webmail, saved the PDF in seconds, and was about my business.

Well, pretty much.  It's taken 30 minutes out of my day to register on these forums and let you know the score.

Again, thanks for the attempt Sophos, but I'll wait until version 2 ... or maybe 3?

  • Dunno what you are talking about....I had used the pay Mac version through my insititution for well over 5 years.  Since leaving that insituttion, I had to remove the software.  I immediately installed this home edition and it's worked flawlessly.

Are you sure you actually have Foundstone Scanline (sl.exe)? I just scanned the application directly downloaded from Foundstone and Sophos didn't report anything. Are you sure you don't have the actual sl.exe malware http://angui123.cn/VirusEncyclopedia/7179.html
