Repair Permissions is SLOWED....

Just a heads up to anyone that needs to do a repair permissions with disk utility while running SAV. Be sure and disable REAL TIME scanning PRIOR to doing repair permissions, or it slows to a CRAWL. Mine went from 4 min to 28 min, when I had just repaired permissions (knew they were good) 10 minutes prior to installling Sophos A/V. I ALWAYS repair permissions prior to installing new software, and then go back and repair again afterwards.

Just a heads up , and lets hope Sophos fixies this issue.

  • Hi osxtasy,

The Repair Permissions action in 10.6 changed compared to 10.5 and lower.  Apple now do a lot more checks (just running a Repair Permissions with no AV installed is slower in 10.6 than it is in 10.4 for example).

The extra checks that occur cause many more open and read requests against files.  The On-Access (or Real Time) scanner intercepts all of these and checks them.  As the Repair Permissions check is doing a lot of reads against a lot of files which aren't often accessed this does cause more work to be done in the On-Access scanner.

Disabling the On-Access scanner while running this will reduce the time it takes.  My only suggestion would be to be wary of doing anything else at the same time (downloading things, running attachments in email, etc) as you are more open to threats.

Im sure your aware of this, but its always worth mentioning.

We have approached Apple about this before but havent yet found a suitable solution for the slow down.  We are continuing to look into this, but it may be some time until we find a solution which both reduces the time taken but doesnt reduce the level of protection.

Thanks for checking out the product
