What email service?

Hi,

And thanks for SAV for mac.  Great software.

I do have a question,  on the preferences  or settings for messaging.  The fields to setup the email don't seem enough to set it up.

Like for example; my main email is with gmail and I also use yahoo. they both required SMTP authentication and SAV doesn't have the fields to input that info. like, user, password, and port.  So my question is,  does anyone know what email service can be used with this ver.  7.2.7c of SAV?

Or is there a way to input all the required info. in the SMTP field? like for example: smtp.gmail.com:username?password?port?.  I've searched the gmail and yahoo help and also google and couldn't find anything.

And Thanks again for the great software,  oh and the great price :-)  I've always run an AV, 1st because you never know. better prevent than suffer and also that most of the people I email still use pc's.. my last one was virusbarrier X5 but that yearly fee for the virus signatures is way too high. and it also took too much memory.

  • Hello,

email notification is intended for central reporting and/or "unattended" machines. Thus it is assumed that generally an "internal" SMTP is used. Sending to you gmail or yahoo address should not require authentication (otherwise a.user@somedomain.net would not be able to send you mail), but depending on the Sender you set your provider might classify the notification as spam.

  • So there is no way to get it to send emails to gmail etc?

We have quite a few macs at home, and keeping track of all of them is quite hard, I thought when it said it could give email notifications that it would put an end to those problems, however it doesn't allow for authentication..

Is there anyway I can send email notifications out without using a SMTP? I tried localhost etc and still nothing...

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Dan.

  • There is a way you can send via your external mail provider -- the solution is to install a proxy locally that handles the authentication for you.  A google search for '"OS X" SMTP proxy' should give you some options.
