Spotlight slowed down dramatically

Hello,

Spotlight is dramatically slowed down by SAV.

It takes 30 seconds to get search results displayed vs immediate lightning fast display before or after inactivating "controle sur acces" (maybe this is online screening in English). But inactivating this screening is a pity .

I'd like to exclude the spotlight index but I can't find where it is.

Could anyone tell me a solution ?

  • It is located at /.Spotlight-V100 (and at the root of each drive you have mounted in the same location).

However, IIRC, this is already excluded by default, and shouldn't cause issues even if it isn't.  Is spotlight still indexing your system?  If it is, there will be a dot in the middle of the magnifying glass.

If all these things are as they should be, it's possible that our exclusion lists for French OS X aren't covering the same data as the English ones.  I don't currently have a French install to test on.

  • This problem began for me on my Mac Book Pro with 10.7.2 starting last weekend.

At first Spotlight began reindexing every time I booted the machine (or logged in and out.)

After following various suggestions elsewhere (not yet having made any connection in my mind to Sophos) such as deleting some preference files and the hidden .SpotlightV-100 file etc.

I seemed to have fixed the reindexing issue BUT the slow finder windows remained (even after turning off All My Files and changing the view options to see if there was any effect.)

As soon as I found this post and turned off the "on-access" scanning (which has worked for a year or so without problems previously) my Finder window issues vanished.  When I re-enabled "on-access":  BANG they returned.

Now, for the icingon this cake:  The same problem has also begun on the Snow Leopard volume of this same MBP.  A

nd I "solved" it the same way. But now I don't have the "on-access" protection I've been used to.

So, my guess is a recent Sophos update introduced this problem.

    Suggestions?

  • Update:

    Hmmm.

A day or so later the Snow Leopard system now seems happy again with Sophon "On-Access" scanning enabled.

The Lion laptop, however, is still a no go, even after upgrading from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3.  Finder windows are very slow updating but the Spotlight reindexing has now stabilized.

    Curiouser and curiouser.
