Hard Drive crashes after pressing 'Scan Now'

So today I decided to download the program for my parents iMac since I already have it on my Macbook.

After I pressed 'Scan Now' the mac shut down. I tried booting it up again but the Hard Drive makes a weird noise. I think I have to buy a new hard drive because it keeps crashing everytime I boot it up.

The iMac I have is the latest 27'' and its the most expensive one.

Sadly I cannot get anything from Sophos as it is a free software and the company does not help people who have problems with the free software.

Did anybody else have this problem?

  • To me this sounds like the hard disk had some damaged areas that were not being used regularly... and when you started a full disk scan, you hit the bad area.  That's just a guess however, as it could be in reality any of the errors currently being reported on this forum that have to do with crashes, and the disk could be a red herring.

The first thing to attempt is to disable on-access scanning (hold down shift when booting up if you can't log in at all) and then run disk utility to check the drive itself for problems.  If you're running 10.7, you can boot off the emergency partition instead and run the disk check from there -- which will also let you clean things up to some extent.
