Reliability & Compatibility?

I bought a new Macbook Pro (with Lion 10.7.4) 3 weeks ago and transferred over all of my documents and installed a lot of non-Apple software including Sophos Anti-Virsus for Mac. After one week, I started having serious slow-downs and freezes. At first, I thought the issues were hardware related. After numerous calls with Apple's tech support, I finally took it to an Apple service technician. After 3 days of testing, hey could not find any hardware issues and advised me to test all 3rd party software for conflicts with OS X.

My first target was Sophos Antivirus. After removing it from my computer, I have had no issues since. I honestly do not know for sure if Sophos was the source the issues. All I know is my laptop is functioning well now without Sophos on it. So now I am struggling with this... I want your antivirus protection, but obviously not if it conflicts with my OS or causes slow-downs and freezes.

I would like to know what steps you take to verify that your software does NOT conflict with OS X and does NOT cause excessive CPU consumption. What is your level of confidence that your Antivirus software does NOT cause issues with OS X? Is the fact that it is FREE causing Sophos to cut corners in its development and integrity as a program?
