Downloading Free Sophos

This may be a dumb comment and/or question, but . . . I finally decided I needed to look into anti virus protection for my macbook pro because I was worried I fell for a scam of give-away ipads. I went to sophos.com and actually did hit the free download for mac, but what came up was something called Mackeeper. It seemed strange, but I couldn't figure out what happened or how. I went ahead and ran the scan program, and it detected (of course) TONS of issues. Meantime, I went on a live chat to figure this out, and the person on the chat said it was not free, but cost $39.95 for the basic program. I then asked how to forget it and remove it. He told me how, and from what I see it is gone now. THEN, I went back to sophos.com and tried again. This time it worked fine, running the scan took a long time, and it said there was nothing wrong at all. ?? Am I wrong in being worried about this whole thing?

Also, I downloaded version 8.0.1C. I am not even sure I downloaded the right program. Did I? Any thought are appreciated.

Thanks,

Crookey

  • Hello Crookey

version 8.0.1C is indeed the correct one. Please see the FAQs for How to check that your download is genuine.

As to MacKeeper - I can see it listed on the cnet download page for Mac HE (which BTW serves 7.3 and suggests you download TechTracker and/or subscriber to update notification. Not only is TechTracker only for Windows XP and above but given that Sophos for Mac HE's AutoUpdate this doesn't make sense at all. Little bit fishy IMO). Anyway I sure Sophos (www.sophos.com) will not refer you to MacKeeper in any way and what's more they won't give you MacKeeper instead of Mac HE. Are you sure you were at sophos.com?
