Version 8's AutoUpdate consistently CRASHING

Hi all.

Did a complete uninstall of Version 7 on my 500 mghz PowerBoook (G3 PPC) running Mac OS 10.4.11, did perfectly clean download and install of Version 8 (restarted, corrected permissions, etc.)... within 5-10 mins max of running, it shuts off AutoUpdate and displays an "x" within the Sophos icon at the top of the screen. Sophos log shows nothing unusual, but system's Console log reports that AutoUpdate CRASHED. Restarting the computer results in a complete replication of the problem EVERY time (i.e. at first Sophos icon appears properly - with "S" in it - but shortly thereafter the "S" is replaced with an "x" and the system's Console log reports that AutoUpdate crashed again). Have tried uninstalling, re-downloading and installing Version 8 with same effect re AutoUpdate each and every time. Never had this problem with version 7, so I'm guessing it's specific to Version 8's AutoUpdate program coupled with my machine and Mac OS version. ALL hardware (CPU, RAM, hard drive, etc.) checks out perfect, and as far as I can tell I don't have any software installed on my machine that would be an obviously corrupting or other incompatibility problem.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I've looked through this board's site but don't see anything directly related to this issue; maybe it's a bug specific to PPC's (or G3 PPC's) running 10.4.11???

  • By the way, I did try removing and then reinstalling Sophos 8, and repaired privileges before resinstalling Sophos 8, but this has not solved me problem. It seems, until Sophos comes up with a solution (or deprecates G3 hardware, which will lead to this anyway) I will be downgrading back to version 7 which functioned without incident on my G3 iMac.
