Macbook Air with Lion freezes during Time Machine backup...

I see a number of threads here with folks having stalling systems, but I have a situation where my Macbook Air completely freezes up (usually when Time Machine backup starts, or that's what I have observed when I wake the system up... the system wakes up, then freezes as Time Machine backup starts).

I logged a case with Apple and since they told me to remove Sophos Antivirus and since then my system has completely stabilized and I've not had a freeze in over a week (prior to uninstallation of Sophos my system was freezing up between 1 and 5 times a day).

Any ideas 'why' this is happening and if Sophos are aware of this and looking to patch/fix it?  Has anyone else experienced this issue and is it possible to run Sophos on Macbook Air/Lion or is there a compatibility issue?

Many thanks for any help/pointers!

  • Mac OS X 10.8.3 on a MacBook Pro 13-inch ealy 2011 (MacBookPro8,1) and a MacBook Air Mid 2012 (MacBookAir5,2) with Sophos 8.0.14C

Both systems seem to intermittently lockup as described in this thread when the system attempts to perform the mobile backup snapshots while disconnected from the TimeMachine drive. I applied the work around of excluding /.MobileBackups/ and things seem to be working better. The hang behavior was not consistant for me however and would only be noticible under certian disk I/O work loads. In my case, a large mesure of patience would allow the system to self recover and resume normal operation (~10 minutes)

Edit: I stand corrected, the freeze behavior happened again, I think it occurs regularly but is only noticable under certian disk i/o loads.

Here's a snippet from the system.log at the time of the hang
