updating free home version

I've just downloaded and installed Firefox for use on my Mac OS X 10.4.11 system.  Since doing that, my free home version of Sophos Anti virus is unable to update.  It will finally connect to the server, and appears to begin an update, but stops before finishing.  I get the message, "Could not update Sophos Anti-Virus."  Is it possible to update the free version, or does this have to do with using Firefox rather and Safari?

  • This kind-of-sorta has to do with updating Firefox and/or Safari... it's likely an SSL (encrypted web communication)  issue.  You currently have some app open in the background that is blocking the updater's ability to use SSL to verify its secure connection to the update server.  We have a number of threads on here discussing the issue.  A reboot is often all that is needed to clean this up; sometimes, you need to use the Activity Monitor to actively quit the background process involved, after which the updater will run and everything will work again.
