During the week commencing Monday July 16, 2012, all customers currently running version 7 of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition will receive an upgrade to version 8. This upgrade will take place behind the scenes – just like your regular updates – so although it will download a little more than usual, you should not notice any major disruption. Most importantly, it will not require you to reboot your system.
Version 8 introduces some great new features, including:
- Scheduled Scans: Now, in addition to On-Access and On-Demand Custom Scans, you can also create Scheduled Scans to run automatically on a pre-defined schedule
- Live Protection: Gives you a direct connection to the very latest information we have about new Mac threats. Using our global intelligence network, we can identify new threats quickly and make sure your Mac is protected—immediately. This feature has been available in our Windows products for a while and I'm really excited that our Mac customers will now be able to benefit.
- Enhanced user-interface: We’’’’ve improved the user-interface and made the product even easier to use
Please note that in order for Live Protection to check for new malware it requires sending a small amount of non-identifiable information about your system and suspicious files to the Sophos online services. At no time is any actual file content sent. If you're not comfortable with this, you can disable the feature by going to the Live Protection tab in Sophos Anti-Virus Preferences.
Version 8 was first released in April. It is already in use on over 250,000 Macs and has been updated monthly since then to address some issues discovered by early adopters.
