memory hog

I've installed and run the Sophos free a.v. for the Mac for several weeks, and the machine has become increasingly sluggish. I finally checked memory use and the a.v. program had glommed more than 1 gig of physical RAM -- it's a Mac mini with 2 gigs installed -- and much more of the virtual memory.

I've had to stop the on-line scanning, but I wondered:

-- has anyone experienced this?

-- is there anything I can do about it?

I ought to note that I'm in the habit of leaving my machines on, as I use them for my home business, and they are rarely restarted.

  • I'll post on the other list, but I did not check those.

I don't transfer many archives to this machine. Most of the 'new' files that would be subject to the online scanning are what the browser brings in. I don't even run a mail client on this machine. It's used mainly for audio/visual and also to look at web pages that I know and that have flash and complicated javascript -- not allowed on the machine I use to do searches and otherwise see unknown pages.
