Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Yesterday I followed the advice to repair permissions, remove and then reinstall SAV for Mac. The icon appeared in the menu bar and survived the day's updates. But this morning I did a manual update (the computer had been asleep overnight, so wanted to be sure SAV was up to date) and the shield disappeared. Like others I've put SophosUIServer in the dock, so can relaunch when necessary. I have come to rely on SAV and find it disappointing that there hasn't been a quicker response by Sophos to issue an update.

  • I am having the same issue with the vanishing shield icon.  I am running Lion 10.8, Sophos version 8.0.6c, Threat Detection Engine 3.34.0, Threat Data 4.80.  Have tried the suggested permission repairs and reinstall of Sophos, but the issue still remains.

  • same here, installed mountain lion, icon disappears from menu, have to reboot, wants to put icon in finder, updated it, but still disappears, cleaned pram, still does it, any help

  • Had same problem here, all though with only one mac...my imac is fine, the icon is there, doesn't disapear at all, however my Macbook Air doesn not have the icon anymore, if i resart it appears for a short time but then disapears again. Seems this issue has not yet been resolved...both Macs are running version 8.0.6C, threat detection engine 3.34.0, threat data 4.80 and they are up to date.

  • I just remembered that when i first installed mountain lion on the imac my first thought was to check my antivirus so i visited the main site to find two download links, one for mountain lion and one for earlier versions so i downloaded and installed the new mountain lion version of Sophos...the imac has been ok so i am wondering if maybe the problem lies in the automatic update to the new sophos verion for mountain lion as that is how my Macbook Air was updated...am now gonna see if there is any change by uninstalling the sophos software on my Macbook Air then downloading and installing the new version of Sophos as i did with my iMac..will update in a few days when i have been able to see if this method has worked.

Following your observations, I also found a version specifically designated for OS 10.8 and downloaded that, used the uninstaller to remove the problematic Sophos with the disappearing icon, then installed the 10.8 version. I did a manual update, and what seemed like a full install was downloaded, the Sophos app in the Applications folder was removed and replaced and the menu bar icon disappeared. But a reboot put that icon back and it's stayed through both manual and automatic updates.

It would seem that while nearly complete Sophos updates are deployed regularly, if the already installed version isn't appropriate for ML, the updates won't be either. Moreover, the general silent update from V7 to V8 took place at a time when most, if not all, users were running Lion or Snow Leopard so much of the installed base is probably faced with this issue but just hasn't noticed or doesn't know where to complain.
