Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Am having the same problem: Sophos disappears from menu bar immediately after an auto-update. Put an alias for SophosUIServer on the dock to restart...and disabled Sophos auto-update. Manual updates cause SophosUIServer to drop-out also...IF there is an actual update. If only checking for an update and none is available, SophosUIServer is not affected...only when there IS an update downloaded.

  • Solution that worked for others was to repair disk permissions, then uninstall/reinstall Sophos.  It seems like what is happening is that the auto-update process tears down the currently running process, attempts to copy the new files into the correct location, fails due to incorrect disk permissions, then fails to re-load the sophosUI process as it doesn't get to the end of the update correctly.  Note that an actual update has to take place for this situation to occur (happens about every four hours).

If this doesn't work, let me know so we can see if there are other issues causing the same problems.

  • Thank you! Proceeded as suggested and following a HUGE update, SophosUIServer shut down and restarted on its own...just as it should. All seems to be good now.

  • You'll need to wait 4 hours to see if it's still good -- there appears to be a separate but similar issue for some people surrounding updates killing the uiserver until you log out/log in.

  • I'm currently having an issue with the UI as well. If the software updates, whether automatic or manually, the Menu Bar shield disappears. I then have to run the UI app. I had to manually add the UI app to the Login Items (which could be troublesome, if more users are ever added). I just now did the Repair Permissions, Uninstall then Reinstall, but the problem still remains: Menu Bar vanishes upon updating.

  • It's been months since the Mountain Lion DP and weeks since GM status.

Still, we have a program that shows 100% reproducible catastrophic failure on fresh install. An antivirus program that cannot even detect an EICAR file.

For me and the rest of the customer base, let me say that Sophos AV has now reverted to Alpha status, not even Beta quality. It speaks volumes about the dependability of the company producing it.

Sorry mates, I am moving to another AV solution.

  • I folleowed the directions and repaired permissions then removed and reinstalled last night and this morning the icon was still available, so maybe the fix will hold.

    :1008640
  • I did the disk repair and the remove/re-install but the problem is still there.

    :1008642
  • The disappearence of SophosUIServer is back again. It was there until after the first auto-update download immediately following log-in this morning.

    :1008646
  • For those of you whose problem isn't fixed by the permissions fix, you'll have to wait for 8.0.7; there is a bug logged on a separate issue with the same symptoms.
