Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Hi Bobcook,

I have another problem I'd like to signal.

It's since version 8.0.11C that sophos cannot update anymore. This is what I get in the logs:

    com.sophos.autoupdate: Updating catalogue information at 10:53:47 22 April 2013
    com.sophos.autoupdate: Catalogue updated at 10:53:47 22 April 2013
    com.sophos.autoupdate: Download started at 10:53:47 22 April 2013
    com.sophos.autoupdate: Download completed at 10:53:48 22 April 2013
    com.sophos.autoupdate: Update started at 10:53:48 22 April 2013
com.sophos.autoupdate: Error: Could not update Sophos Anti-Virus at 10:53 on 22 April 2013
    com.sophos.autoupdate: Verification failed

I'm connected to the Internet via a corporate HTTP proxy, however the updates are downloaded correctly. The updater fails just after the download phase.

Some more info: I had the problem in versions 8.0.11C, 8.0.12C and 8.0.13C.

The version I have installed is:

    Threat detection engine: 3.42.10

    Threat data: 4.88

My system is a MacBookPro with Retina Display, 2.3GHz Intel Core i7, 8Gb of RAM running Mountain Lion 10.8.3

  • Hi c4live,

Do you know the name of the proxy your company is using? And do you know if it requires some sort of authentication?

  • Just sending a comment to say that I have REMOVED Sophos antivirus from my Mac. This is the second time in the past two years I have installed it and, shortly after, encountered serious performance issues with my computer. It happened before under OS 10.7 and now on OS 10.8.3. The issues I encounter are: massive slowdowns (spinning wheels), various apps crashing or freezing (Mail, Firefox, BusyCal); kernel panic crashes, cloning backup failures, etc. Both times, as soon as I completely remove Sophos antivirus and run some maintenance apps (Disk Utility, Fix Permissions, Disk Warrior, etc.) to clean up the mess, my computer runs just fine. I wish I didn't have to say this and I had high hopes, but Sophos is not working for me.

  • Hi AMC3,

Sorry to hear you are having such a terrible experience with our product. We strive to make a solid, high performance product that should work with very little impact to your machine, although sounds like its not going to work for you. Thanks for giving it a whirl, and thanks for the feedback. If you are interested to pursue this a bit further, I'd like to know more about your system e.g. could you send me a System Information report? Note there could be personal or confidential information in that report, you should read it before forwarding it.

While I don't doubt your experience above, I just have to ask did you try to run Disk Utility, Fix Permissions, Disk Warrior, etc before removing Sophos and see if that solved your problem? I am sure you you did, but thought its worth asking anyway.

  • Kevin.... I don't mind you asking. Yes, I did run Disk Utility, Fix Permissions and Disk Warrior (my long time go-to favorite). And, I use OnyX and TinkerTool Pro. I cleared out cache files and generally tried everything I know to fix my MacBook Pro. No effect. And I just got a report today that, regretably, an Apple engineer confirmed that Sophos triggered the breakdowns, including the Kernel Panic, that I experienced. I don't know if the issues involved Sophos interacting with some other software. But that's like trying to anticipate multi-drug interactions.

  • Well I am sure they (Sophos) would appreciate that information. I would like to know the eventual outcome of the fixes to this as well because its important to me that I have something to protect my Mac computer for the same reason you tried it again.

    Kind Regards

  • Alas that time has come....

After trialling Sophos for some time now I have been forced to uninstall this product. A week ago my desktops all went grey. All my desktop images  dissappeared even after reboot they would not return. I saw the other fellows response about his problems and thought maybe it was Sohphos. So I unstalled the product yesterday rebooted and my desktop images returned.

Seems like you have some work remaining to reach the reliability that is required. If you confirm the issue and know its fixed then let me know and I may try again. Other than this issue it appeared to work ok but I will know more over the coming days. It did detect quite a few viruses in the time I had it on my mac book pro retina. Mostly windows viruses coming in through USB keys and the occasional download so it was quite effective in that regard.

It is possible the interaction with new screen savers may be an issue, I just dont know. The issue did not present itself when they were installed only some time later. I installed Desktop Aquarium application and I run the HAL9000 (Console Editon) screen saver.

    Sincerely yours

  • While I was away, something partially crashed my Mac. (Mac Mini 2.6 Ghz i7, 16 gb ram, Fusion drive, OSX 10.8.3). I was able to screenshare/control via Timbuktu remotely (I was miles from my desktop computer at the time). Except for email, it was mostly idle although there were several apps running doing nothing.

I noticed that Sophos menubar icon was indicating "updating". Could not launch Sophos. I was not able to quit any running apps, nor launch any. When I tried to launch Terminal I got a message that This app can not be run on this architecture! Timbuktu Pro was running and put up a dialog box with an error number. Every time i would click "ok" to clear the error dialog, it would be replaced with another one in about 5 seconds.

I could pull down menus, but not activate any new commands. Dock menus would display, but not activate a command. I could pull the Apple menu to "restart" but not activate the command. Strange "partial crash". Or maybe Sophos On-Access scan had locked me out of everything.

I eventually connected via SSH and rebooted the machine that way, which was successfull. The machine itself was operational, and I could run top. So the machine is not really crashed. 1 process was stuck.

On reboot, all problems were gone, but there was a message that Sophos Live Protect could not run. And the Sophos app was missing from the apps folder. The Sophos remove app was stil in the apps folder. No Sophos parts were in the trash. I was not able to open any part of Sophos from the menubar icon (the menubar icon was still there). So I ran the Sophos Remove app, rebooted, downloaded the Sophos home for Mac installer (Mtn Lion version 8.1.14), and installed. Seems to be ok again.

I can only assume that Sophos had some major problem during an update.

I looked at my backups ( the version of Sophos I had previously was also 8.0.14, which seems to be the same as what I just downloaded today. So I don't see why Sophos would have had any reason to remove the app from the apps folder.

    Thought you should know.

    Dave
