Home Edition: Problems connecting to the registration server

I mentioned yesterday on a number of threads that our engineering team are actively looking into the problems connecting to the registration server during install. A typical symptom of these problems is that installation faile with a message saying "The installer cannot connect to Sophos, although your Mac appears to be connected to the internet..."

We learned today that there was a problem with our registration servers earlier this week. They were rebooted without our knowledge at the weekend and the registration service was unavailable or unreliable afterwards. This situation was resolved as of 16:00 GMT on 13 December 2012 (8am Pacific time). We are working with our hosting provider to ensure that such outages are avoided in future.

Those of you who experienced installation failures over the weekend or earlier this week may well find that it works now.

Of course, this does not explain all the problems that have been reported here and work to investigate and improve the installation process continues.

Thanks again to everyone for your support of Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition and these forums.

I have Symantac on my mac, but have not updated. I keep getting annoying messages to update but am broke. I heard I can get a free Mac AV program here but when I try and download it says the five is as I recall  88 MB yet it takes a second to download then shows in my download folder as a .dmg, that is not recognized. It's not really downl;oading or it would take a long time. Don't know what to do because I may have picked up a virus on FB and someone suggested downloading this program would do the trick. Any ideas? Do I need to uninstall all the symatec files, could that be the problem. I have Mas OS 10.6.8. Any change someone could send me a link to a download that works, or any suggestions would be appreciated. happy Holidays.

Before you install, you should uninstall or at least disable the Symantec offering, so there are no conflicts.  If you have not updated in the past year, the Symantec offering will be virtually useless as an anti-virus package, as most of the Mac malware currently in the wild is less than a year old.

If you're having problems downloading the DMG through Safari, try using Chrome or Firefox to download it; it is unlikely that you'll run into the same issues.
