How do I un-encrypt a laptop with a corrupted windows installation.

Hi,

I have a laptop with SafeGuard Easy 5.6 running W7.

The windows OS is corrupted to the point where we can't add or remove programs, install updates etc.

I want to do a fresh install of windows but because i can't uninstall SafeGuard i can't decrypt the drive beforehand.

Can i use the Recovery CD to unencrypt the drive?

Can i install a fresh copy of windows onto an encrypted drive?

What options have i got?

  • You can't decrypt from a CD, though this is something we've asked from 5.21 days many moons ago. Complain to your SE and see maybe they'll finally listen. All other full-disk encryption products allow you to authenticate to POA from a CD and perform emergency decryption. Hell, Utimaco's own Easy does it, not quite sure why this is not an option in SGN.

Backup your data and install new version of Windows on top. I would do a quick format for a good measure but it's not mandatory.
