SafeGuard Enterprise Upgrade from 5.35.5 to 5.50

We are in the process of doing this, and from what I am reading it appears to be fairly straight forward.

Would anyone please share their experience(s) with doing this upgrading in their organization?

Gotchas?  Trip ups?  Undocumented "features"?

  • Thank you Sandy.

I was really hoping to get some feedback by now, but I should've remembered that last week was a short one for those of us here in the states.

  • Not exactly what you're going through, but I went from v5.40 to v5.50 a few months back, and the server upgrade was pretty straightforward.  The only suggestion I would make is to clear out the EVENT table in the database before the upgrade if possible.  When you run the SQL script to upgrade, it will make some table changes, which will cause SGN v5.50 to "repair" the database, and if your EVENT table is large (like mine is), it will take a long time for the check and repair process to complete.

The other piece of the puzzle is clients and client upgrades.  Depending on the modules you're using (specifically, CP), the client upgrade process can be frustrating.  If you are planning on upgrading your clients, check out this thread:

    Hope this helps.

  • ssjj, this is the exact kind of feedback I was hoping to get.  Your experience (lesson learned) is definitely something we want to be well aware of.  Perhaps Sophos might add this tip to their instructions for the upgrade (and future ones)?

As far as the clients go, we're planning on doing them as we roll along (from what I'm reading, there is no immediate urgency to updating the clients after getting the servers and such taken care of).  Our main priority is getting Windows 7 64-bit capability for us, so those systems will obviously get the new 5.50 client.

    Thanks!!

  • Oh, I forgot one last tip:

Since you're going from 5.35 to 5.50, I would definitely double check the support section of the release notes to make sure that your SQL server and clients are compatible 5.50.
