Need verification for upgrading from 5.50.0.116 to 5.50.8

I believe I know the answer to this, but just wanted to get some clarification.  Since this isn’’’’t a major update I don’’’’t need to touch the database or anything, I can just do a straight upgrade on the server without uninstalling, correct?  Also, would I need to create a new Client Config file?  I wouldn’’’’t think I would need to.  TIA

    Great question rex!

I was actually mentally preparing for the flood of questions on this topic. I have to preface this reply with recommending to everyone that's updating SGN to read the SGN Release Notes before upgrading to make sure you don't have any unexpected results from your upgrade. Also, I'm going to point out that the steps I'm going to provide are for upgrading from SGN 5.50.0 or SGN 5.50.1 to SGN 5.50.8. If you are on an older version of SGN please refer to Chapter 16 of the SGN Installation PDF documentation because there are some extra steps on how to update the database. If you are using SGE or SDE please refer to Chapter 24 of the SGE/SDE Admin Guide for detailed instructions and the SGE/SDE Release Notes.

Keep in mind that these steps are high level steps, once again if you need details please refer to the Admin or Installation guides. Update the components in the sequence provided to ensure success. No uninstallation is required for the server components, you can install on top of your existing installed server environment. Before updating your servers, it's also recommended that you shutdown the IIS services and close all open SG Management Center connections.

Then run the corresponding installers for each component. With this upgrade from SGN 5.50.0 or 5.50.1 it's important to note that the database is not getting upgraded via a MS SQL script beforehand.

    1. SafeGuard Enterprise Server - SGNServer.msi
    2. SafeGuard Web Help Desk (Optional) - SGNWebHelpDesk.msi
    3. SafeGuard Management Center - SGNManagementCenter.msi
    4. SafeGuard Enterprise Client protected endpoint computers - SGNClient.msi or SGNClient_x64.msi

The SGN Client endpoints have some additional considerations. Please refer to the chapters mentioned above for details. The same process to upgrade the SG Configuration Protection module still exists as discussed in thread .

I also wanted to add that for upgrades you will not need to create a new client config MSI but I recommend that you recreate your existing client config for new installations of the SGNClient.msi. Make sure your packaging people receive the recreated MSI.

Happy upgrading and let us know your results!

  • I have already performed this upgrade, went painlessly. Upgraded in said order in the above post.

The only question I was unsure of was do you have to upgrade the client preinstall package? I ask because when you try to install the .8 version it just asks to repair meain its using the same MSI guid.

    Hi Typhoon87,

I didn't have to upgrade the client preinstall package. I compared the SGxClientPreinstall.msi sizes and they are identical to the byte even though their created and modified dates are different. If you are trying to run the SGxClientPreinstall.msi while it's already installed it will ask you to Modify, Repair or Remove. My advice, until you read differently (meaning the Release Notes) I'd leave it alone.

if you're doing a v5.50.x -> v5.50.8 upgrade, do all of your managment consoles need to be upgraded, or can an older 5.50.x MC connect to a 5.50.8 server?

    Hi ssij,

How have you been? Yes, all of the SGN MCs need to be upgraded. You don't want older versions of the SGN MC to connect to the database.

Another important thing to note is that if the SGN MC and the SGN Client are installed on the same computer, then they both must be upgraded.
