Decrypting a HDD in PE Enviornment

On PCs with SGE 5.40, 5.50 and 5.58, how can we decrypt HDDs using the provided recovery disks?

Thanks!

  • Anybody? I'm not necessarily looking for a complete uninstall, but I at least need a way to decrypt an unbootable HDD without removing it from the box.

  • Hi RJ_Shane,

completely de-crypting the harddisk using the Recovery Disks from the linked KBA ( http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/108805.aspx ) is not possible. You can unlock the drives using a C/R and perform recovery/repair tasks but not completely de-crypt the drive.

If you're using OPAL hardware / harddrive encryption in combination with SafeGuard Enterprise instead of software based encryption, de-crypting the disk could be achived from within the recovery envrionment.

  • Best option is to use a SATA to USB kit to decrypt. Just FYI you'll need to fix the boot system on the drive to make it bootable again
Boot to a win7 DVD or flash drive and use the recovery console to run the following commands:
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot

The WINPE environment provides emergency access only and not decryption
