Safeguard Portable

I think that I'm hosed, but I'm going to ask anyway.  I have an external USB disk drive that has "some" files encrypted using a key from 2008.  I never remembered setting a key and now I don't know what it is.  Is there any hope of retrieving my files?  Lots of them are from school and lots of them are from work.  I'd like to have both back!

The s/w was pushed out by my company so I didn't even know it was there until after it had been encrypted. Also the PC that it was originally encrypted on has long been replaced.

Thanks for any help.

  • Hi JAG,

if SafeGuard Portable is (still) located on the USB drive and you open it to browse to the folder on the left side that contains the file, then you could see the key that was used to encrypt the file on the right side, next to the filename.

Depending on whether the encryptionkey is a key that was set and distributed by your old company or it is a local encryption key that you might have created on your own, you need to have the company encryption key available or need to remember the password you had configured for your local encryption key.

As you do not remember setting a password for a local encryption key, it might be a company encryption key that you can no longer access outside of the company.

Encryption Keys in SafeGuard Enterprise are never deleted - even if the user account or machine was deleted. If you still have connections to your old company, it might be worth to ask if they can help you to decrypt your files.

    Regards,

    Chris
