Encryption Key on Portable Device

My company installed Sophos encryption on my new company owned laptop. They did not disabled the encryption on portable devices and all the files on my pendrive got encrypted. Since it was the first time doing this, I didn't write down the encryption key I used, and now I cannot decrypt the files. I tried all the options I can remember from the key I used without avail. How can I retrieve the encryption key? I need to work on these files. The IT people were unable to help, they don't know how to. Can you help? Thanks.

  • Hi ChiefUW,

It seems as if your IT department has configured the (automatic?) encryption of removable media using SafeGuard Enterprise Data Exchange. The key that was used for encryption depends on the configuration of the policy that was set by your IT.

You can look it up if you insert the stick again, locate an encrypted file (should have a green key symbol next to it), right click it and choose “File encryption” from the context menu. If you now select “Show encryption state” it will show you which key was used for encryption.

You can also select “Decrypt” to decrypt the single file (or on the top level when selecting the USB stick, to decrypt the whole content of the device) – please note that the decrypt function is only available if the policy was configured this way. You should talk to your IT department regarding the policy settings if required.

    Cheers,
    Chris
