Incredibly slow boot speeds using Sophos Encyrption

We are running Dell Latitude E6410 laptops with 3gb of memory and Intel i5 processors running at 2.40Ghz. We have 7200 RPM 300gb drives. We are running Windows 7.

After encrypting with Sophos Safeguard the laptops are extremely slow - some may take in excess of 15 minutes to boot. The laptop will get to the Sophos screen then go to a blank black screen and do nothing for at least several minutes. During that time the hard drive light will be lit solid. Even after getting to the Windows 7 login screen you will have to wait there for several more minutes with the hard drive light lit before you can even login.

Does anyone have some suggestions on might be causing the issue? This is a major issue for us that is effecting many people in our office.

  • Ok... so a few things.

For one, we are using version 5.6 which I personally see as a problem. But, I'll ask you guys because you're the experts. In your opinion is 5.6 more prone to slowness issues? We are trying to convince the powers that be to upgrade to version 6 because it seems to me that it will solve a lot of our issues.

The issue is that after encryption with Sophos Safeguard the laptop boot time is brought to a crippling hault and may take 15 or more minutes to get to a useable point. After Windows has loaded the computer seems to function as normal for the most part but certain applications are extremely slow.
