Incredibly slow boot speeds using Sophos Encyrption

We are running Dell Latitude E6410 laptops with 3gb of memory and Intel i5 processors running at 2.40Ghz. We have 7200 RPM 300gb drives. We are running Windows 7.

After encrypting with Sophos Safeguard the laptops are extremely slow - some may take in excess of 15 minutes to boot. The laptop will get to the Sophos screen then go to a blank black screen and do nothing for at least several minutes. During that time the hard drive light will be lit solid. Even after getting to the Windows 7 login screen you will have to wait there for several more minutes with the hard drive light lit before you can even login.

Does anyone have some suggestions on might be causing the issue? This is a major issue for us that is effecting many people in our office.

  • In my personal experience, the system remaining on a black screen for an extended amount of time during boot up is indicative of a bad driver; our Lenovo e520s (similar machine, i5 with 4gb ram) take more than 5 minutes to boot when an incorrect graphics driver is installed. But when the drivers are correct, it takes about a minute and twenty seconds to boot with Safeguard 6 installed. I would make sure that you have the correct chipset driver, the correct IME (Intel Management Engine) driver, and the correct graphics driver (should be intel hd 2000/3000) installed, and it should boot in a good amount of time.
