    Hi David,

I'm trying to set up a SafeGuard Enterprise installation for one of our customers.

The server is already installed with a demo license and I'm within the testing phase at the moment.

Im going to encrypt up to 10 laptops, but before I need to know whats the best practice for backing up SafeGuard Enterprise protected laptops. They use Windows XP/Windows 7 in a 50:50 ratio, thats why I thought about the windows backup as a good solution (though we're going to update the Windows XP sooner or later, I would use Lenovos Rescue & Recovery in the meantime)

I've read (in this KB http://www.sophos.de/support/knowledgebase/article/67375.html) , that backup applications using volume shadow copies are not supported, and I can agree with that because I tried to restore my test machine from a Windows 7 Image backup, but nothing happens except an error code (0x80070002).

So the question is if its possible to do the Backup/Restore with Windows Backup (maybe with the help of the recovery CD, as you wrote in your post?) or can you suggest a solution for backing up SafeGuard protected machines?

Maybe the other board members got some experiences with this topic which they would like to share?

Thank you in advance and best regards,

    RMC

    Hi RMC,

Thank you for posting your question in the SophosTalk community forums.

There are couple items I need to comment on from your post.

    • Make sure you have a newly generated demo license. If you use the default license of 5 then policy distribution will shut down until you get a demo license for more than 5 clients.
    • Lenovo RnR is supported on both of those OS platforms. Please make sure POA is enabled so you can authenticate to the Lenovo recovery partition. Make sure you are using the supported versions of SGN and Lenovo RnR. Another tip, make sure the Lenovo RnR is installed *before* the SGN Client is installed. Definitely read the documentation so you understand how to get the 2 pieces of technology working together easily.
    • To be clear, that list of limitations were for SGN 5.40.0.152 and Windows 7 32-bit combinations. Current releases, which is what you should be using, such as SGN 5.50.8 supports Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. A lot of those limitations have gone away. Some still may exist so please test in your actually environment before deploying to production.
    • Since Sophos has many technical relationships with many software manufacturers, I'm in a position where I can only suggest what is supported and certified in our QA labs. As long as the SGN filter driver is loaded (with authentication) before the backup software needs to read the disk, then the backups "should" work. Some backup software reads directly from the disk sectors at a low level which bypasses our filter driver. We don't work well with those technologies. I know it's not what you are looking for so hopefully you can get some suggestions from our fellow community members.
