Sophos Safeguard for MAC 5.50 Encryption Paused, fails to restart

Mac OSX 10.6.8, Safeguard 5.50, Intel EFI 64, ICore 7, 8 GB Ram, 500 GB drive

Recently rebuilt this machine.  Originally had a single partition and safeguard worked okay.  Recently (6 months after original build) I unencrypted the drive and removed safeguard, rebooted.  Loaded OSX and partitioned it into 2 partitiones (boot 300gb, data 200gb).  After installing apps and updating the OS and patches decided to install safeguard.  Started encrypting both partitions.  Partition 2 completed and Partition 1 (boot 300gb) paused shortly after partition 2 finished.  Currrently at 41.7 % completion.  Will not resume encryption sequence either by the GUI or the command line.  I tried removing the encryption from the boot drive and re-encrpyting but it gave me an error 51.  So I rebuilt it again and I am still getting the same issue.  Suggestions?

  • Hi B2loggie,

Thank you very much for posting and welcome to the forum.

With regards to your description it seems as if the hard drive has a bad sector which caused the encryption to stop in the version you are using.

The best next steps would be to manually decrypt the drive using the available button. After that you can restart using the latest version. Additional information can be found in this KBA http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/111616.html

However, recommendation is to change the HDD rather than reinstalling if a bad sector was encountered before as this can indicate physical problems with the drive.

    Regards

    Dan
