5.50.8 and SSDs Performance Impact?

What is everyone's experience with encypting SSDs via 5.50.8? Anyone cares to post some times?
We've noticed a serious performance decrease when SSD is encrypted with SGN, regardless of whether full-disk or fast initial encryption was used. This is on new HP machines with i7 processors, running Windows7 x64 and latest SSDs, so both hardware and OS support TRIM operations.

Example numbers, for those who's interested, gathered via CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1:

UNENCRYPTED Corsair CSSD-V128GB2 Drive:

Sequential Read :   212.628 MB/s

Sequential Write :   175.936 MB/s

Random Read 512KB :   155.177 MB/s

Random Write 512KB :   154.502 MB/s

TrueCrypt ENCRYPTED Corsair CSSD-V128GB2 Drive:

Sequential Read :   162.017 MB/s

Sequential Write :   134.865 MB/s

Random Read 512KB :    83.691 MB/s

Random Write 512KB :    60.338 MB/s

SGN 5.50.8 "fast initial encryption" ENCRYPTED Corsair CSSD-V128GB2 Drive:

Sequential Read :    71.869 MB/s

Sequential Write :    69.355 MB/s

Random Read 512KB :    65.140 MB/s

Random Write 512KB :    68.579 MB/s

As you can see, performance impact is quite significant, especially in overall sequential read and write operations. My understanding was that "fast initial encryption" was supposed to be the solution for this performance hit in SSDs, but as you can see, this is not the case.
Can anyone confirm that they are seeing similar figures?
Thanks!

  • So, I finally got my company to buy me a SSD for testing purposes on the laptop that I'm using, and for my own reference, I also ran CrystalDiskMark on my disk, before and after the fast initial encryption:

    [Edit]:

Forgot to mention the specs:  Latitude E5410, Core i3-330M, 4GB RAM, Win7Pro x64, Crucial C300 128 GB SSD

    Before Encryption

    Sequential Read :   225.7 MB/s

    Sequential Write :   140.0 MB/s

    Random Read 512K :   226.5 MB/s

    Random Write 512K :   140.6 MB/s

    Random Read 4K:   15.55 MB/s

    Random Write 4K:   22.69 MB/s

    Random Read 4K QD32:   162.2 MB/s

    Random Write 4K QD32:   124.3 MB/s

    After Fast Initial Encryption

    Sequential Read :   68.53 MB/s

    Sequential Write :   56.08 MB/s

    Random Read 512K :   66.53 MB/s

    Random Write 512K :   60.77 MB/s

    Random Read 4K:   10.93 MB/s

    Random Write 4K:   13.20 MB/s

    Random Read 4K QD32:   85.13 MB/s

    Random Write 4K QD32:   57.73 MB/s

I didn't install truecrypt on here, so I have no idea how those compare.

It does kinda suck that the performance after encryption is less than half (other than Random 4K performance) than the level before encryption, but at least it's better than a mechanical HD.

Can any Sophos people comment about whether or not SGN/SGE interferes with TRIM operation in Windows 7 (could that be the cause of this massive drop in performance)?
