OSX Boot problem.

Hi all.

We have an iMac.  It was encrypted with Safeguard but the software is still installed.

The only account with Admin' access was suddenly unable to login - we suspect a corrupted profile.

We tried to boot from the install disk but are unable to do so because of the Safeguard login at boot.

We un-encrypted the disk but still get the requirement to do a Safeguard login before the machine will boot and still cannot

boot from the Mac install disk.

We are unable to uninstall Safeguard from a normal user account as the system won't accept the Admin password!

Any suggestions?

We are now considering removing the HDD and erasing it however this will probably invalidate the Apple warranty on the machine.

  • Hello Countzero,

many thanks for your posting and welcome to the forum.

If you want to boot from the Apple install disk you don't need to authenticate to the POA (SafeGuard login at boot).
Simply press and hold the Option key (alt key ) and start up your iMac until you enter the Startup Manager, then insert the Apple install disk, wait a moment and choose it.

You will find detailed information in Apple Article HT1310

The machine will then boot from the install CD and you will be able to access the disk utility to erase the HDD.

So no need to remove the HDD :)

    Regards,
    Tim
