SGM401: Invalid kernel error

Hello,

I have a laptop running SafeGuard that was working fine until this afternoon.  The laptop is running XP Pro, and it was running perfectly until I rebooted it after installing some wireless software.  Instead of the machine coming back up normally, the boot process fails and it displays "SGM401: Invalid kernel. System halted."  I looked around via Google for a solution, and found a possible solution using aefdisk and a bootable USB drive.  My question is, is there any other way to recover from this error?

James

I hve the same problem only with a Windows 7 system.  I'm getting the SGM401: Invalid Kernel System Halted.  Will the same fix work for Win 7?  I'm using SafeGuard 5.50.0.116

Hi James, Infracat and everyone else reading,

My apologies for providing inaccurate information. I read James's error as SGE401 and not SGM401. If anyone else noticed that I was inaccurate, thanks for not publicly shaming me into a correction.

    Here's the correction:

Since both James and Infracat are receiving the same error, for data recovery I recommend reading KBA 110156. This KBA will point to another KBA which includes a PDF that details the steps to create a recovery disc.

To investigate this reason for the SGM401: Invalid Kernel Error could be related to your prepping of the disc before SGE/SGN 5.50 or higher is installed. I recommend reading through this KBA Preparations prior to the installation of SafeGuard Enterprise. Even though this KBA lists XP as the OS, some of these steps are relevant with WIndows 7 as well. Please read the related documents listed at the bottom of the KBA regarding using CHKDSK and defrag as apart of your disk prep.

If the error reappears, please call Sophos Technical Support because there may be a possible deeper issue which will require log collection.
