Any chance that Sophos will provide 64 bit encryption filter drivers for use in WinPE?

About a year ago we had requested 64 bit version of the drivers needed to unlock a hard drive in WinPE.  Global support declined, most likely because we were the only ones requesting it.

Is this likely to change in the near future?

  • You can easily recover any 64bit system with our 32bit WinPE.

Why would you want to use a 64bit version?

  • The reason is that many of our recovery tools do not run on 64 bit systems.  We have customized the WinPE interface to be more than a platform for data recovery; we remote in to it, do system restores, admin password resets, to name a few.  Some of that requires 64 bit bootrec /scanos to work to detect the offline OS.  In order for the 64 bit vesion of that file to run, the MSDART we incorporated into the 64 bit WinPE platform needs to be 64 bit as well.  When we build a 64 bit WinPE with 32 bit Sophos filter drivers, they fail to run, due to the architecture incompatibility.

So the question remains:  Will there ever be 64 bit drivers?

  • Thank you for your explanation. Your use case is understood and makes a lot of sense.

The issue is not the driver, they are 64bit but the required tools (RecoverKeys.exe and others). We do not anticipate such a 64bit version of the tools to come within the next 6 months; providing them at a later point in time is still open.

  • Wondering if this as been looked at again.  Found that the MS Suface Pro would only boot to x64 based PE.  Making it difficulet to add Safeguard to encrypt it if there will be an issue getting data back if there is a problem.  The only PE provided by Sophos is x86.  Unable to add the recoverkeys.exe to a x64 based PE as the exe is only x86.  Thanks.

  • This is extremely frustrating from a tech and end user point of view that Sophos will not provide 64bit versions of their support tools when the majority of enterprise level systems are moving to 64bit Windows OS's.  Many windows problems can be solved by simply running the startup repair, howver you cannot run startup repair in a 32bit PE environment (which the current SG tools will only support) on a 64bit system.

What is the status of this?

  • I would suggest submitting it as a feature request for a future release.
    You can do that here:

  • Paul,

On the page you linked Safeguard is not yet supported for feature requests in this manner the bottom of the page states that until they are the community is where features requests should be posted. If this information is outdated this page should be updated.

    "All other products

We are working on bringing the same method of suggesting ideas, product improvements, and feature requests to all of our other products. Until this work is completed please suggest your ideas in our community."
