Sophos and OPAL SSD Drive - performance

I have Sophos Safeguard Enterprise installed on my company laptop. 5.60.0.192

My laptop has got SAMSUNG SSD PM830 Opal compliant drive.

My expectation was that with OPAL drive, the performance cost of encryption should not be visible at all.  However my drive is still much slower than on plain Win7 (w/o encryption).

I am wondering if my sophos client really takes advantage of OPAL and did not fall back into SW encryption. Is there any way to check it from the client if Sophos is using OPAL feature to accelerate HW encryption?

  • Have you tried 5.60.1?  I just installed that version on a couple of Dell's that came with 128 GB Samsung PM830 drives, and not only did the encryption finish in less than 10 minutes, they seemed MUCH faster than my laptop (similarly Dell laptop with a Crucial C300 128 GB SSD, also running v5.60.1).

I figured that it was the OPAL component that caused the drive encryption to be faster, but I could be wrong.
