Sony VAIO VGN-SZ4XWN - First reboot won't start drive encryption! Aaaah! nightmare!!!

I have run the following on a laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-SZ4XWN):

SGxClientPreinstall.msi (no issues with installer)

then 550defaultLaptopConfig.msi (no issues with installer)

and finally SGNClient.msi (no issues with installer)

At this first reboot i just get the Utimaco blue screen with the light blue characters on it.  It will not continue to do the login and drive encryption!!

I've run the Sophos Safeguard Disk Encryption Recovery Disk in an effort to repair the Security Kernel, however... the following appears:

"No valid security kernel found. Repair aborted."

Rebooting the laptop brings in the usual blue screen with light blue characters.

I have tried disabling USB and attempted all the other Shift+Fkey switches.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks in advance
