encrypt/decrypt progress stays at x%

SafeGuard Easy:

per this KB article http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/103978.html

says bad hard drive or external usb was unplugged(it was unplugged, but only after two weeks of the system sitting at 1%)

"If you need more information or guidance, then please contact technical support."

New Computer is functional, but ecview progress has been stuck for several weeks.

C: drive has red key icon in explorer, but encrypt/decrypt in ecview shows 1% since 6-29-2010

E: drive (external USB hard drive) IS accessible with no red key encryption icon, was plugged in for 7 days at installation, but was unplugged and subsequently replugged, but the system had been sitting at 1% for a week prior to unplugging

Tier 3 Corporate Support in my company cannot fix the problem.  They say the system needs wiped.

Is there an alternative?

    Hi woody123,

Thank you for posting your question in the SophosTalk community forums.

In addition to the KBA you referenced, I have also seen this behavior in the situation when there are a couple third party processes fighting for disk I/O. SGE and SGN both have intelligent encryption throttling. What does that mean? It means when a user or process needs priority on a task, the initial encryption process will throttle back, sometimes staying at x%. I usually see it steady at 1%.

    The resolution

Identify the third party process(es) using Task Manager by sorting on the CPU column. Kill the process(es) consuming the most CPU and watch the encryption viewer move upward. When I witnesses this before the two processes were bouncing between 89% and 97% of total CPU usage making them quite easy to find.

    More info

The processes I usually see consuming so much resources (which might not be the same in your case) are tvt_reg_monitor_svc.exe from Lenovo and the McAfee Registry Monitor process (sorry I don't recall the exact process name).
