Media Center guide downloads fail - again!

Product Version: Astaro Security Gateway Version 7
 

Task:
    To allow for Microsoft Media Center Edition Updates to pass through the Astaro.  As Media Center updates using HTTP 1.1 do not work well through content filtering or virus scanning proxies and exception will need to be made to ensure all updates pass without scanning.

Steps:
    If the Astaro is running HTTP Proxy in transparent mode.

    1.  WebAdmin>>Web Security>>HTTP>>Advanced>>Transparent Skip List.
    2.  Skip Transparent Mode Hosts/Network -- Add internal Media Center Server.
    3.  Click on Allow HTTP Traffic for listed host/nets.
    4.  Click on Apply.

    If the Astaro is running HTTP Proxy in standard mode.

    1.  WebAdmin>>Web Security>>HTTP>>Exceptions>>New Exception List.
    2.  Create name for new rule such as: Media Center Updates
    3.  Click on Antivirus, Extension blocking, URL Filter and Content Removal checkboxes
    4.  Click on For These Source Networks/Hosts.
    5.  Add internal Media Center Server.
    6.  Save

if you don't want to skip all traffci from the mediacenter, than you can also add the EPG server by adding a dns host to the "Transparent Skip List" with the URL "epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com".

How can the same be done with v 6.304? I would like to roll back and test this out. With V7.004, broesing is quite slow...

If you are using the HTTP proxy in standard mode, check to see if you have "Skip proxy for local use" in the IE enabled. I found disabling this improved the websurfing speed. I can still connect to local devices as needed. The http proxy still gives what I would describe as time out errors. It throws up DNS errors as page not found part the way through surfing a site.

I was in hopes to run in transparent mode in v6 - and it may not be an option. As I remember, it is a little harder to configure in v6.004... I am going to try and see what the outcome is.

I really like v7 and may jump back to it - everything is backed up [:)]...

Hallo,

I wanted to download the guides with MediaCenter for Windows Vista, it worked not corrrect. It still failed with Code:13 . 
I have defined a dnshost e.g. EPG with "epg.tvdownload.microsoft.com". Then I added this dnshost in Skip Transparent Mode Hosts/Network, applied it.

But the Media Center failed to download the EPG.

Have anyone an idea ?

HI there, 

what you did was nearly perfect, the only change is that you need to use the network definition type 'dns group', as the dns name resolves to multiple ip addresses and the type 'dns host' only uses the first ip, the 'dns group' uses all ip addresses behind the name.

At least this works for me.
